Gravel Around Salzkammergut is exactly what the name promises: a one-day lap of the lake and mountain country of the Salzkammergut, from the Attergau through the Almtal and past the Almsee, Bad Ischl, the Ausseerland, Lake Hallstatt and the Mondsee. The organisers count five big climbs, among them the Gschirrsattel, the Eisenau Alm and the Mondseeberg, on routes that are about 40 percent gravel and almost entirely on quiet, low-traffic roads and tracks.

The day is built to be flexible: riders who reach Bad Ischl too late for the southern loop through the Rettenbachtal, Bad Aussee and Lake Hallstatt simply carry on towards the Wolfgangsee and still finish officially. Supply boxes are taken to depots along the way, and the route is followed with live tracking.

It is run by the team behind the Race Around Austria ultra-cycling race, and the finish in St. Georgen im Attergau lands in the middle of the local Marktfest, where gravel finishers mix with Race Around Austria athletes and thousands of visitors at a finisher party with a DJ and fireworks.
