The Gravel Race Geração Radical is a gravel-bike-only day on the rural tracks of the Beja municipality in the Alentejo, run by a local cycling and mountain bike association from the village of Penedo Gordo.
Riders set off in boxes from the village and follow a GPS-guided route on farm roads, with only some points marked on the ground. The organisers describe it as non-competitive, yet they still record finishing order and hand trophies to the first three men and women, so there is something for both racers and riders out for the day.
It has a strong village feel: sign-on and a shared lunch take place in the pavilion of the local kindergarten, with hot showers, a bike wash and finisher medals waiting at the football ground.
