The organisers like to say there is only one marathon where you can run across almost an entire country, and this is it. The LGT Alpin Marathon climbs from the Rhine valley floor into the high mountains of Liechtenstein, and its hall of fame lists winners every year back to 2000, among them Jonathan Wyatt and Elizabeth Hawker.
Runners set off flat along the Rhine to Vaduz, cross the little town centre and start climbing past the vineyards of the Prince's court winery, with Vaduz Castle in view. Forest paths lead up into the Walser village of Triesenberg and on to Masescha and Silum, with wide views over the Rhine valley, before dropping to the chapel at Steg, where the shorter race finishes.
Marathon runners carry on through the Valorsch valley to Sass Fürkle, the high point of the course, where the Malbun valley opens up below. A final loop past the Friedenskapelle and the alps of Turna and Pradamee brings them into the Malbun finish, having crossed the country on foot.
