About this event
Nova Eroica Gran Sasso brings the Eroica all-road format to the high Apennines of Abruzzo, inside the Gran Sasso National Park. As at the other Nova events, timed sections sit alongside relaxed riding, so it works both for riders who want a result and for those who simply want to see the mountains.
The routes link the stone villages of the park, Castel del Monte, Castelvecchio Calvisio, Barisciano, Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Calascio, whose Rocca is described by the organiser as the highest castle in Italy. The longest gravel loop circles the whole park and opens onto the wide plateau of Campo Imperatore under peaks of more than 2,000 metres.
Around the ride the village turns into a small festival, with food stands, folk music in the square and an evening concert, and the latest edition added a canoe outing on the Tirino river the day after. It is organised by L'Eroica, the Tuscan team behind the strade bianche events.
