PlugPlug Scheldeland opens the PlugPlug Gravel season in East Flanders, a relaxed, fully catered gravel ride rather than a race. Riders roll out from the Nieuwdonk domain at Berlare and follow the side arms of the Scheldt on what the organisers call champagne gravel: long, flat strips through open countryside.

Towards Zottegem the land starts to fold into gentle hills, adding some climbing to the day. Around three quarters of each route is unpaved, with quiet country lanes linking the gravel sections, and riders navigate by GPS on courses drawn by De parcoursbouwer.

The series is run by Count Me In, a Belgian organiser of recreational gravel days, and the formula is about comfort: coffee and cake at the start, feed stops with pancakes and sports nutrition, mechanical support, a bike wash and an after-ride bar and terrace to finish.
