Sterro Appalla is three days of gravel, tents and bonfires run by BBP Gravel Firenze, a Florentine club, and it feels more like a travellers' gathering than a sportive. Riders meet in the city, roll out together on a gravel track to a hillside base camp, and spend the evenings on cycle-travel talks, workshops, open-air cinema and the club's famous parties.
From the camp the rides explore the white roads of what the organisers jokingly call the Jurassic Chianti, from a family-friendly loop to a hard one on the wildest tracks they know. The field kitchen, built from scratch every year by club volunteers, serves local dishes, and on the last morning everyone rides back into Florence together for a final round of hugs.
