Vesuvio Gravel calls itself the first bikepacking journey of Campania: a self-supported loop around the metropolitan area of Naples and into the Campanian hinterland, with no assistance and no set stages. Riders choose where to eat and sleep, and the organisers give them a GPS track and a list of places to stop.
The adventure starts at sea level by the shores of Lake Averno near Pozzuoli and threads natural landscapes, medieval villages and art cities. The volcano is the compass: the organisers challenge riders to keep Vesuvius in sight for the whole trail, even when it is many kilometres away. The evening before the start brings riders together for an aperitivo, dinner and stories.
