About this event

Dead Ends & Cake is built on a lovely contradiction: every checkpoint sits at the end of a dead-end road in the mountains of eastern Switzerland, and the way between them is entirely yours to find. Riders start and finish in St. Gallen and go non-stop and self-supported, day and night, choosing both their route and the order of the checkpoints.

The appeal lies in the roads most people avoid. Narrow lanes cut into the rock, steep alp tracks and rough blasted tunnels climb almost free of traffic to high pastures and valley heads, and riders who are happy to leave smooth tarmac often find a way over the mountain instead of turning back. Road, gravel and allroad bikes are all welcome.

It is run by The Cake Movement from St. Gallen, and the name is meant literally: every checkpoint greets riders with cake and a chance to share stories from the road. The organisers recommend embracing the short late-June nights on empty roads, and places are drawn by lottery on Christmas Eve.
