About this event

DGI Hærvejsløbet calls itself Denmark's biggest recreational cycling event, and its gravel routes follow Hærvejen, the historic road along the spine of Jutland. For centuries it was the peninsula's main artery for armies, merchants, cattle drovers and pilgrims; today riders set off from places such as Jelling, Bryrup and Rebild and all converge on one shared finish in Viborg.

The landscape was shaped by the last ice age: hills, river valleys, forests and open country along the Jutland ridge, ending on the cobbles up toward Viborg Cathedral, a red carpet and a party on Paradepladsen. Results are not the point; the organiser stresses the personal challenge and the shared day, and encourages riders to come as a team that sets its pace together.

It is run by DGI Midtjylland with more than 1,000 volunteers from local clubs along Hærvejen, who handle starts, feed stations, signposting and the finish area and receive part of the entry fees for their work. The idea was inspired by Sweden's Vasaloppet, and road and MTB riders share the same finish line on the same day.
