About this event
Gravel Ground brings gravel riding to the heart of the Ruhr: industrial charm meets gravel around the former Ewald colliery in Herten and the Halde Hoheward, at 170 hectares the largest spoil heap in the region. Guided and community rides head out through the Pott, while a test zone lets riders try new gravel bikes on the kind of terrain they were built for.
There is racing too: the Scary Schotter race, the Legends of the Halde hill climb up the spoil heap and a kids' race, plus an expo where more than 50 exhibitors showed their bikes and kit in 2026, a stage with talks and a strong community feel. The festival is run by Delius Klasing, the publisher of BIKE and TOUR magazines, and was launched in 2025 with Maxxis as title partner.
