MIUT Madeira Island Ultra-Trail

MIUT, the Madeira Island Ultra-Trail, is the island's flagship trail running weekend, organised by the Clube de Montanha do Funchal and now heading into its eighteenth edition. It is part of the World Trail Majors circuit and sends runners across the mountainous heart of Madeira.

The longest race sets off from Porto Moniz on the north-west coast, while the shorter ones start from São Vicente, Boaventura, Monte above Funchal and Porto da Cruz, so each distance takes in a different slice of the island before the weekend gathers in Machico for the awards. The organisers stress that much of the course runs through a protected area of high biological value, between rugged peaks and ocean views.
