Sparkassen GravelKap Zwenkau turns the harbour mole at Kap Zwenkau, on the shore of the Zwenkauer See, into a meeting point for gravel riders from across Germany. It is a community effort: the Zwenkau association Neuseensport runs it with the Gravel Leipzig club, the local cycling club RV Zwenkau 1890 and the bike shop Grupetto, backed by close to 50 volunteers.
The race is ridden in laps on dusty tracks through the landscape around the lake, with start and finish right on the mole. Racing starts in the afternoon, so the longer distances carry on into the evening light.
Off the bike it feels like a festival on gravel, with live acts and DJs, entertainment for children and a short bambini race for the youngest. The organisers describe the last edition as sun, sweat and good beats, finished off by a sunset over the finish area.
