About this event

The Via Transilvanica Marathon brings runners and mountain bikers onto Romania's first long-distance trail, the route its organisers, the Tășuleasa Social Association, built across the country from the northeast to the Danube. The association is a volunteer-driven NGO founded in 2000 by Alin Uhlmann Ușeriu, and the races are run in that spirit, with Tibi Ușeriu as the event's ambassador.

The marathon and the MTB race share a course that leaves the association's campus on forest roads, passes the church in the village of Ciosa, climbs on dirt tracks to a viewpoint above Lunca Ilvei, then drops steeply to a river crossing before long forest descents and a final climb back to camp. Checkpoints with water and snacks are spread along the way, and every competitor has to pass through each one.

It is a day for the whole family too: alongside the races there is a shorter cross-country run and a hike, activities for children while their parents compete, and the option of camping at Tășuleasa.
